Disasterchannel.co,- The Baduy community itself is divided into two, namely the Inner Baduy and Outer Baduy. In this discussion, the author will focus on the Inner Baduy community, on how to maintain forest areas in order to remain sustainable. The Baduy Dalam community is an indigenous community in the Lebak Regency, Banten Province. The Baduy Dalam community itself resides in three villages namely Cikeusik, Cikertawana and Cibeo.
The Baduy Dalam community is a society that still maintains traditions handed down by their ancestors, therefore the Baduy Dalam still rely on nature like a mother who always meets their needs. So it’s no wonder that the Baduy Dalam people really care about the forest and rivers in their area.
In order to preserve the forest, the Baduy Dalam community already has a traditional forest conservation concept. This is certainly very unique, because the Baduy Dalam are already familiar with the theory of conservation with their own thoughts. The forest itself in the Baduy community is divided into several areas, namely forbidden forest, dudungusan forest, and cultivated forest.
The forbidden forest for the Baduy Dalam community is a forest where all the flora and fauna that are in it are not allowed to be taken. In fact, no one is even allowed to enter the forbidden forest. Of course, the thinking of the Baduy people in treating forbidden forests can be concluded that these regulations are the Baduy Dalam community’s way of protecting forest ecosystems. Meanwhile, dudungusan forest is a forest that is conserved or protected because it is in the headwaters of a river, or it is considered sacred or is believed to be the ancestral place of the Baduy. Whereas what is meant by arable forest is not forest according to conventional thinking, but arable forest is the farming fields of the Baduy Dalam people.
The concept of forest division in the Baduy community is one of the traditional conservation methods. This makes the Baduy people unique and have very wise local knowledge, especially regarding forest management. In addition, the concept of arable forest is also unique in the Baduy community-style conservation concept. This is a way for the Baduy people to protect the forest in order to provide space for their community which is designated for agricultural activities. The traditional conservation of the Baduy Dalam community is very similar to modern conservation in the style of national parks which also divide zones within their administration. In fact, according to the author, the Baduy community is an intelligent and wise society.
In this article, I hope that dear readers can take lessons from the local wisdom of the Baduy people in protecting the forest. Of course, we, modern society, must follow the example of the Baduy Dalam community, who respect customary regulations that protect forests. Don’t let us modern society destroy forests that have been included in the category of national parks.
